The “Human Cloud” and What It Means for On-Demand Talent

Today on the blog we wanted to take a step back and revisit a report from leading research firm Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA). The Workforce Solutions Ecosystem provides a nice, comprehensive lay of the land, and we thought it was worth sharing to provide a bit more context about where Shiftgig fits within the space.

As the war for talent heats up and a new generation redefines work, today’s businesses are turning to less traditional work arrangements to complement their full-time workforce. Case in point: the global staffing market was estimated at $424 billion in 2014. That number continues to grow quickly, and managing these workers and optimizing the workforce mix has undoubtedly become a challenge.

SIA organizes players within the ecosystem into six buckets: staffing, process outsourcing, payrolling/compliance, contracting/consulting, talent acquisition technology and other workforce solutions. Within the talent acquisition technology category are Vendor Management Systems (VMS), Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and job boards. What’s unique about this category is that it is the only one which includes a sub-category, the so-called “Human Cloud” which includes Shiftgig and other online staffing platforms, crowdsourcing and online work services.

According to the report, “The reason the Human Cloud is important is because a lot of innovation is being led by companies operating in this space with new business models seeming to appear on almost a weekly basis.”

The full report has great information and defines many of the terms used today throughout the staffing world. No matter what your current workforce strategy entails, it’s important to understand the models and technology available to you as you pivot to meet your organization’s goals.
