Market Spotlight: Milwaukee

Today we're speaking with Laura, Shiftgig’s General Manager for our Milwaukee office. Welcome, Laura!

Laura, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us a little about yourself and the Milwaukee team?

Sure! The Milwaukee Shiftgig team is what makes this city really work. We all come from a hospitality background, so everyone on our team has been in the trenches and can really relate to our Specialists with similar experiences. Outside of work, we are a pretty fun team; I am an actor and stand-up comedian, LT is an retired semi-professional darts player, and Jamie plays bass in a band.

Sounds like you all know how to have a good time! What makes Milwaukee so great?

The unique part of the Milwaukee market is the people. The city is big enough to have great amenities like dining and entertainment, but we still maintain the feel of a smaller community. The people are friendly and care deeply about their community.

What a great place to be! Can you tell us a little bit about what you’re seeing in the Milwaukee market right now?

Absolutely! The trade, transportation and utilities sectors are where we are seeing the most job growth in Milwaukee; there’s a 3.5% increase compared to last year there. It’s a big shift from what the city has historically been known for, which is manufacturing. We’ve always been a blue collar town, so things are definitely changing around here.

It Sounds like there’s a lot happening. Are you seeing any other business trends?

We have seen some decreases in jobs, especially within the financial activities sector, which is down 4.8% since last year. Overall, however, metro Milwaukee’s unemployment rate has officially reached its lowest level in nearly 16 years, a pretty incredible achievement for our city!

One of the most interesting trends we’re witnessing here at Shiftgig is an increase in applications from students. These students represent workers of all ages who are going back to school and are looking to Shiftgig to give them a flexible schedule.

What’s currently happening in the city that you can share? Are you getting ready to help businesses with any large events?

One of the things we’re looking forward to most is the new Bucks Arena. Construction on the $500 million arena, located just north of the BMO Harris Bradley Center, started in June and is making some serious progress. Right now, we're looking forward to helping our Specialists work events there in the years to come!
