Today we're speaking with Mike, Shiftgig’s General Manager for our Chicago office. Welcome, Mike!
Mike, thanks for joining me today. Can you tell us a little about yourself and the Chicago team?
Absolutely! I started my career as a teacher working with special needs kids in grades 6-12. After a few years I transitioned to Enterprise Rent-A Car, where I really built my business foundation, but felt like something was missing. I knew I wanted to find a way to make a difference in the lives of others, but also wanted to make sure I could financially take care of my family. I got into the “staffing world” as I felt that it could help me achieve both goals and have been in the industry ever since 2000.
At Shiftgig, I am surrounded by a great team, who share that common goal of “making a difference.”It really is an honor to work with such a diverse team each with a unique background (former college hockey players, soccer players, actors and comedians), who help keep things efficient and fun!
It Sounds like you’ve got a great team! What’s unique about the Chicago market?
Chicago is truly a Midwestern town. It’s a great place to go to school, have a career, raise a family or just have some fun. Although it’s the third largest city in the US, it has the feel of a smaller town. It literally has endless amounts of entrainment, and there is always something to do. With that said, it’s not uncommon to run across people you know whenever you're out. It’s also a great sports town, with professional, amateur and college sports. There is something for everyone.
Have you been Seeing any business trends?
Being such a diverse market, there is always a lot going on here. Chicago is home to 31 Fortune 500 companies and 400 corporate headquarters, and the average worker makes a higher wage than most of the country.
Chicago was recently voted in the top 100 places to live, and is home to some of the best schools in the country as well. We are seeing significant growth in the IT, retail, hospitality and warehouse sectors, and while unemployment is still slightly higher than the rest of the country, it has shown significant improvement throughout the past year.
That's Interesting! Are you seeing any other business trends?
Yes, other trends show that healthcare and education are expected to grow the most in the coming years. Additionally, the level of education required in these fields will also continue to rise. A high school diploma may no longer be enough to compete in these fields for sufficient success in today’s economy.
This trend actually is a great way for companies like ours to help out individuals locally, and we are seeing plenty of people taking advantage. For people who need to work a few shifts here and there, Shiftgig helps people get some extra cash as they are getting an education. The gig economy is in full force here in Chicago.
What’s currently happening in the city that you can share? Are you getting ready to help businesses with any large events?
We are always working with some of the biggest venues in town. We have had a significant presence working with partners at major sporting events, like the White Sox, Cubs and Bears stadiums. We also have a legitimate amount of larger events taking place throughout the month of December, especially with some of our museum and zoo partners! We're excited for what 2017 has in store for Chicago.
