Beyond the Job: Community Operations Team

Today, we’re speaking with Amanda Kolinsky, our Community Operations and Account Management team member in Chicago. Welcome, Amanda!


How long have you been on the Community Operations team?

My story is a little unique! I have been on the Community Operations (what we call ComOps) team for a little more than two years. I started at Shiftgig as a Recruitment Coordinator in September 2014 and was given the flexibility to recruit the types of positions I was most interested in.

Since I had a background in experiential marketing and events, I started working closely on growing this division of the business. I fell into a hybrid role that was partially recruitment and partially community operations almost immediately. At the beginning of 2015, I was part of a small team to launch our experiential marketing vertical and since then, I have continued to work in both Recruitment and ComOps.

What’s your favorite part about being in ComOps?

Every day is different. There’s a lot of variety in the role and it’s extremely rewarding. While the other members of my small team focused on new business and client relationships, I was able to build a team of nationwide brand staff from scratch and watch it grow.

Working for ComOps is hard work and often involves long hours, but at the end of the day, it’s worth it. There’s consistently been nothing more rewarding than reading reviews on social media on how much our brand staff Specialists love working with Shiftgig and hearing clients rave about our team.

I’m also lucky to have met some of my closest friends through my work. I went out to Los Angeles over the summer to visit two of my friends and I loved seeing people’s reactions when I said I met these girls while video interviewing them to work a Super Bowl gig.

Can you briefly describe your day-to-day activities?

In the last eight months or so, I’ve started managing some of my own accounts and staffing them. Because of this, I’ve been able to spend more time developing and growing client relationships and recruiting for more specialized Brand Ambassador positions. It’s a hybrid role that I’ve been wanting for a long time.

As far as my day-to-day goes, I usually start off with recruitment – searching for, managing and creating profiles for candidates. The second half of the day, I spend more time communicating with clients and brand staff on details and logistics surrounding our current programs. I also reach out to our current talent pool to continue staffing any open events.

What has been your biggest learning experience in this role?

I actually don’t have a background in staffing or recruitment – I graduated law school and realized I didn’t have the passion I needed to start a career in law. This job kind of landed in my lap, and I truly haven’t looked back since. I’ve learned everything about recruitment, staffing, experiential marketing, building relationships, communication, and most of all, I have learned what it’s like to be truly passionate about something. As cheesy as it sounds, this job has allowed me to learn more about myself than anything else I could be doing. Like any job, it has it’s good and bad days, but I’ve learned to cope and appreciate each and every moment.

Can you share a story about your most successful or exciting moment on the job?

This entire job has been made up of successful and exciting moments, but anyone who has worked in the events industry knows that there are a lot of challenges, too. I love hearing positive feedback from clients and Specialists, but I’d have to say that the most exciting moment was my recent promotion to Account Manager. I have worked really hard to get where I am, and I’m extremely excited for the next chapter and all of the additional opportunities to help Shiftgig grow.

What are the key attributes for success for your position or within the ComOps team?

As a ComOps, you will work long hours, nights, and weekends, but it’s all worth it if you’re driven, passionate, thick skinned and empathetic. You also have to be innovative, stubborn, resilient, hardworking, organized and creative. In the end, honestly, you’ve got to be a little obsessed.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Shiftgig?  

I am someone who eats, breathes, and dreams Shiftgig. I get to wake up every morning and go to work at a job I love with people I love and respect. Shiftgig has a fantastic executive team and an awesome work environment. I’m passionate about what Shiftgig stands for and cannot imagine myself working anywhere else.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Hmmm… this is a hard one. I’ve always been that person who gets a little uncomfortable when asked what my hobbies are. That’s probably why I like my job so much – in a lot of ways, it has become my “hobby”.

My favorite things to do when I’m not working? I like celebrating recent accomplishments with my team, going out to different bars and restaurants in Chicago, spending time with my family and four-year-old sister, and of course, sleeping.
