The Three Biggest Challenges for Businesses Using Gig Workers

Until recently, gig work was usually only associated with applications like Uber, Doordash, Grubhub, Postmates or other on-demand B2C services. However, gig work is now making its way into large enterprises that must examine how this new population fits into their talent strategies. We’ve outlined three common roadblocks for businesses making their way through this new world of work:

Defining “Work.”

The complex needs of the average business, flexibility challenges and scarcity of talent has forced today’s staffing models to significantly change. The most competitive and profitable businesses use a strategic mix of contingent workers and full-time employees in order to drive maximum results and ensure operational agility. Businesses need to think first about the work that needs to be completed rather than the worker who would do it. With this mindset in place, you’ll be better equipped to take advantage of on-demand talent when appropriate.

Getting to Know the Who Real-Time, On-Demand Workers Are.

The definition of gig worker has changed and enterprises need to better understand this growing population. If they don’t, scaling their workforces up or down quickly won’t matter because it’s doesn’t positively affect business results. Today’s gig workforce is highly skilled and on-demand work is appealing to them because of its flexibility, not because it’s a financial necessity. To stay competitive, businesses must implement strategies to better engage this different breed of gig worker.

Striking the Right Balance of Traditional and Non-Traditional Labor.

Tapping into the right mix of full-time workers and contingent labor should hinge on the kind of work that needs to be done. Jobs requiring a very specific skill set where collaboration and interaction is largely unique to the individual in the role usually means it can be filled by a full-time employee. However, if the job requires a more general skillset and it doesn't need to be done by the same person every day, a contingent worker can fill the need. Finding the right mix of these two workforces will allow more business agility, quickly fill critical skills gaps and assist in reducing overall labor costs.
